Most apps claiming to track DP views use one of the following methods, which are often inaccurate:

Many users download these apps hoping to see a secret list of people who have viewed their own profile picture. Can You Actually See Who Viewed Your WhatsApp DP?

| Countermeasure | Description | |---|---| | | WhatsApp has rolled out a feature that prevents taking screenshots of others’ profile pictures. When a user attempts to capture a screenshot of a full-screen DP view, the app blocks it and displays a restriction notice. This feature has been deployed to both Android and iOS stable releases. Group profile pictures, however, remain screenshot-able. Screenshots of the smaller thumbnail preview in the chat list are also generally not blocked. Users can still bypass this restriction by using another device (e.g., a second phone) to photograph the screen. | | Privacy Options | Users can restrict their profile photo to “My Contacts” or “Nobody,” effectively blocking all DP viewer tools. | | Terms of Service | WhatsApp prohibits the use of automated tools for mass data collection (known as “scraping”). Accounts suspected of scraping personal information from WhatsApp, including profile pictures, may be temporarily or permanently banned. | | Legal Threats | Creating and distributing tools specifically designed to circumvent WhatsApp’s privacy protections may violate laws like the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which prohibits tools intended to break copy protections. | Most apps claiming to track DP views use

Older versions of WhatsApp had a vulnerability where if you changed your privacy setting to “Nobody,” your old DP might still be accessible via a cached CDN URL for hours. Some viewers exploited this delay. Meta has since fixed this with near-instant cache invalidation.

Even tools that claim to show you "who viewed your DP" (like WhatsBox) are misleading. WhatsApp does not provide such data through its API, making these results unreliable and the tools themselves unsafe.

Here is the hard truth: You cannot legally or technically view a DP that is set to "Nobody" or "My Contacts Except..." using a third-party app, provided you are not in the allowed list. If an app claims to do this, it is likely a scam to steal your data or install malware. The only exception is if you are part of a group chat with that person—sometimes, group members can view DPs regardless of settings, but this is a loophole, not a reliable feature.
